Sub grade is a vital, unseen step.
Preparing it properly is crucial for the longevity of the concrete.
It should be made from a road base material, such as #304, #411 crushed stone, or recon, for final grading. It needs to be machine compacted or rolled.
This not only gives the new concrete a solid base, but it is also a barrier between the soil and the concrete, keeping the damp soil from deteriorating the concrete from underneath.
4" is sufficient for driveways, patios, and sidewalks. But many contractors use 2x4 lumber for their form boards, which only measure 3.5".
Losing that 1/2" will affect the durability of the concrete. So make sure that the finished grade reflects that extra 1/2", and that you are getting a true 4".
Concrete is very strong under compression.
The compression strength has a PSI number.
The price of concrete, per yard, is determined by PSI strength.
Be sure you are getting 4K PSI mix, which is a commercial grade concrete, in lieu of a 2500 PSI mix.
Concrete is extremely weak under tension. Therefore, it requires internal rebar or wire mesh reinforcement.
Be sure that a rebar grid is tied into place, or that wire mesh is laid out inside the concrete.
Hand tooled, or saw cut - Either way, relief joints need to be at a proper depth, which is at a minimum, 1/4 of the thickness of the slab; and they should not exceed 100 sq ft panels.
All inside corners should be relieved.
Here at The Concrete Don LLC, we are firm believers in water curing all of our work. In this process, the newly poured concrete needs to be kept damp for 7 days after being poured.
By doing this, within one week, the concrete is 90% cured to it's full strength. Water helps concrete to cure evenly.
After this time, it is safe to apply a penetrating or an acrylic sealant.
Water flow needs to be channeled/directed properly, away from foundations and other potential problem causing areas.
Concrete is something that you loo at every day. It has to look good because it is there to stay.
By skipping some of the above processes, you may get a better price. But when the concrete fails after a few years, that little bit of money that you saved, is not going to be worth it.
We hope this information was helpful to you.
